At the beginning of December, I finally found the car I had been looking for for months. Low mileage, manual transmission. I flew out to St Louis early in the morning and left for Knoxville in the afternoon. Early the next morning, I set out for best drive of my life. The extra two and half hours to the 20 hour drive was worth it to experience the legendary Tail of the Dragon.
The sun was out, the air was in the mid 40s, and there were hardly any cars on the road. Any drive through the mountains is a joy, but it doesn’t get much better than over 300 turns in just over 11 miles. I spent most of that stretch in 2nd or 3rd gear, keeping the V10 in the upper half of its 8300 rpm range. Though the S85 was never known for a loud exhaust, its Formula 1-inspired song is still a delight as it bounces of the rock walls.
I love a good road trip. With Dory and the sangerminis, we made it home from New Orleans after MINI Takes the States in about 15 hours. This one took about the same, and was one again a thrill.
